OSU Dental HOME Coach
The Ohio State University College of Dentistry Dental Health Outreach Mobile Experience (HOME) Coach provides services that have made a difference in the quality of life for school-age children without dental insurance by decreasing absenteeism and unnecessary pain. The HOME Coach is a 45-foot dental office on wheels which includes three treatment areas equipped with ceiling-mounted monitors to entertain and educate patients, dual slide-out rooms, intraoral cameras, digital radiographs, an interactive tablet educational waiting station, and multiple built-in safety features.
The Dental HOME Coach brings dentists and oral health care to children at local schools during regular classroom hours. The Coach is staffed by faculty-supervised senior dental students and dental assistants who provide comprehensive treatment that includes diagnostic and preventive care, restorative dentistry, digital radiography, and minor surgery. The Dental HOME Coach makes an impact on our local community by providing services to approximately 2,500 children in Franklin County annually. The graduating dental (Doctor of Dental Surgery) class of 2014 provided 9,120 procedures during 2,916 encounters for an estimated $362,000 in dental services to elementary school-age children.
When the necessary information is known, public insurance is billed (approximately 70% of the patients seen). However, children without insurance receive treatment at no cost to the family.
