Ironton Lawrence County CAO Family Medical Centers Ironton Children's Dental Center
The Ironton Lawrence County CAO (ILCAO) has provided medical services for underserved residents since 1969 and has been funded under Section 330 since 1979, adding the Health Care for the Homeless (HCH) program in 1992 to care for the county's rural homeless. Today, ILCAO has seven medical sites which includes specialty services provided by St. Mary's Hospital of Huntington, WV and the County's first 24/7 Emergency room. The health centers provide medical and mental health services with a total of 16 providers (Family Practitioners, Pediatricians, Psychiatrist, Dentist, Dental Hygienist, Nurse Practitioners) and a number of support staff. Recently, ILCAO Family Medical Centers opened its first non-profit dental center on October 25, 2012. The dental clinic has become a referral point for private offices and dental safety net clinics throughout the region for children who need specialized dental care in the dental office or a hospital setting, thus reducing the burden on the parents and patients from travelling hours for oral health care.
The Ironton clinic is equipped with 4 dental chairs with a capacity to expand to 6 dental chairs. It is fully digitized with paperless electronic charts (DENTRIX), digital radiography (DEXIS and GENDEX), intraoral camera (GENDEX) and a portable handheld x-ray tube (NOMAD). The clinic presently serves the needs of children younger than 19 years of age and special needs patients of all ages.
Upon securing a HRSA New Access Point (NAP) grant, a new health center is due to open in Proctorville, OH another Lawrence County city which lies just across the Ohio River from Huntington WV with a projected opening date in April 2013. The dental clinic at this site will be outfitted with 6 dental chairs, will be fully digital and equipped electronically to provide the latest advancement in primary dental care. And finally, serious discussion with The Ohio State University School of Dentistry and Nationwide Children's Hospital of Columbus is underway to participate in dental public health experiences for the dental, dental hygiene students and dental residents in the future providing an opportunity to promote higher education, train, recruit and retain the future dental workforce from rural Appalachia.
The dental clinic is located at 1408 Campbell Drive, Suite 200, Ironton OH 45638. The clinic accepts all insurances, Medicaid (OH,WV,KY), self-pay and a sliding fee scale. Clinic hours are Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. For more information, call 740-534-9231 or visit the website at: http://www.ilcao.org.
