OPEN M Dental Clinic
OPEN M (Opportunity for People Everywhere in Need Ministry) is committed to building bridges out of poverty by fostering health, wellness and nutrition for the body; education for the mind; and hope, joy and spiritual growth for the soul. In an effort to fulfill this mission, OPEN M started the free health clinic in 1995, and has continued to grow and expand over the past seventeen years. It is the only operating free health clinic in Summit County, serving approximately 650 uninsured and homeless adult patients yearly. Currently, the clinic offers internal medicine along with eighteen additional specialties. Specialties include cardiology, chiropractic, dental, dermatology, diabetic education/nutrition, endocrinology, nephrology, neurology, optometry, orthopaedics, physical therapy, podiatry, psychiatry, pulmonary, smoking cessation, social services, urology, and women’s health. Additionally, OPEN M offers some basic in-house lab services for patients and performs EKG’s and echocardiograms, as well. The agency has been very fortunate to provide an expanding array of services, but continues to strive for more. Their goal is to benefit the entire community while treating every patient who walks through the doors with dignity, respect, integrity, compassion, and excellent care.
More surprising than the scope services the OPEN M Clinic provides are the health professionals who offer care. OPEN M operates with four full-time staff, including two nurses, an office manager, and a receptionist. The rest of the clinic’s providers consist of 220 volunteers who carry out their work with love and compassion. Volunteer providers include physicians, specialists, dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, medical assistants, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, lab technicians, and clerical staff.
The dental clinic, a singular fully equipped operatory at OPEN M, began in 2003 and continues to function with volunteer dentists, dental assistants, and hygienists. Through the dental staff the clinic offers diagnostic services such as examinations, oral cancer screenings and radiographs; patients can have their teeth cleaned and can seek basic restorative care such as fillings, extractions and even root canals. In 2011, the Clinic completed a needs assessment among the Summit County community and the OPEN M patients. The report revealed a growing need for dental services among very low-income uninsured residents. From 2011 to 2012, the dental clinic has seen a 200% increase in the number of patients receiving services free of charge. As a result, the clinic began to seek out additional ways to provide dental services to more of their patients.
The OPEN M Dental Clinic is located at 914 Princeton Street, Akron, Ohio. The clinic phone number is (330) 434-0110, ext. 413.
