Roselawn Dental Center
The Roselawn Dental Center is celebrating six years of providing dental care to children ages three to eighteen in the greater Cincinnati area. The Cincinnati Dental Society, ever mindful of growing numbers of families who live in poverty, saw an unmet need for this target population and initiated a 501c(3) agency newly renamed the Cincinnati Dental Society Oral Health Foundation. The goals for the clinic were clear: to improve the overall health of area underserved children through education and dental care, which includes preventive and restorative care. They also wanted to encourage families to utilize local existing programs and establish a “dental home” for those in need.
Fueled with $132,000 in grants and financial donations, the Cincinnati Dental Society (CDS) launched the new program. Roselawn Lutheran Church made a substantial donation and Christ Cathedral Church offered additional funds to purchase a chair lift to make the clinic accessible for disabled children. CDS members have continued to donate funds and supplies to start and maintain clinic operations. Today the clinic is furnished with two fully equipped operatories, including an x-ray unit and a Panorex machine, as well as other accompanying dental equipment.
Staffing consists of area dentists, and occasionally an entire dental staff, who volunteer time and effort to treat area children. Currently the clinic is open one day each week providing emergency and preventive care, as well as restorative services such as fillings, extractions and stainless steel crowns. All services are free charge for those qualifying families who are not Medicaid eligible, do not have dental insurance and live at or below the 200% FPL. The clinic operates primarily during the school year. In the summer months the focus is on screening and securing potential patients for the upcoming school year.
The Roselawn Dental Center is located in the lower level of the Roselawn Lutheran Church at 1608 Summit Road in Cincinnati. The Dental Center operates by appointment only; appointments are made through scheduling coordinator, who visits churches, local schools, libraries, food pantries and other social service agencies searching for families who may be in need of immediate dental care for their children. Clients may also call to schedule follow-up treatment for cleanings, x-rays and fluoride treatments. Patient education is also provided and has been a successful tool for the many clients.
