Northeast Ohio Neighborhood Health Services, Inc.
NorthEast Ohio Neighborhood Health Services, Inc. (NEON) is a federally qualified health center serving greater Cleveland for more than four decades. The vision of NEON’s founders was to create a health center where families could receive essential health care services within their own communities without regard to their ability to pay. This vision continues today through an ongoing commitment to promote access and to reduce health disparities for residents in 20 neighborhoods within the cities of Cleveland and East Cleveland. NEON was privileged to serve over 43,000 patients in 2010.
NEON’s oral health program has been a part of this commitment since 1968 as a core component of an integrated model of care. NEON offers preventive, restorative and emergency dental services for patients across the lifespan serving children, adults and seniors. Dental services include oral examinations, prophylaxis, sealants, x-rays, oral hygiene instruction, amalgams, composites, extractions, root canal therapy, crowns, prosthetics, bridges, and emergency examinations. Additionally, NEON has a centralized oral surgery clinic at its Hough Health Center that is available twice a week. Dentists refer patients to the dental surgery clinic for major oral procedures (i.e., impactions and biopsies). The Hough Health Center also houses a dental lab that performs denture repairs, resets teeth, takes preliminary impressions for fabrication of full and partial dental appliances, and for crown preparation.
The dental director provides leadership for ten dentists, one oral surgeon, and two dental hygienists, as well as supporting dental assistants. The entire dental staff has access to computerized clinical charting, digital x-rays, intraoral imaging and treatment plans through a state of the art Electronic Dental Record system. The electronic dental record is integrated with NEON’s electronic health record and practice management system. Dental records are now accessible to providers regardless of health center location within the network.
Looking toward the future, plans are currently underway to expand services at the Shaw Wellness Center at Shaw High School to include dental mobile van services for students in East Cleveland. This initiative will build on NEON’s longstanding experience in providing essential primary care services to children and adolescents in a school-based setting. Funding for this project was made possible by a recent HRSA Capital School-Based Health Center award.
Dental services are available weekdays, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., at each of the six health center locations. Additional Saturday hours are available at the Hough Health Center. For more information, visit NEON’s website at www.neonhealth.org.
