Dental Center of Northwest Ohio
The Dental Center of Northwest Ohio is Toledo’s only stand-alone safety net dental clinic servicing low income individuals and families in the 18 counties in Northwest Ohio.
Since 1910, the mission of the Dental Center of Northwest Ohio has been to provide primary oral health services for underserved children, adults, and seniors in Northwest Ohio, to promote the value of good oral health through education, and to serve as an advocate for those with limited access to dental care. This year, the Dental Center is celebrating its 100th anniversary of providing oral health services all across Northwest Ohio!
The Dental Center currently operates two clinics in Ohio: Toledo, which includes an adult clinic and Tooth Towne (children’s clinic), and one family clinic in Findlay. In 2006, the Smile Express, a dental office on wheels, was put into service.
Founded by volunteer dentists of the Toledo Dental Society (TDS) in 1910, the Dental Center continues to partner with TDS for access to care. This partnership enables the Dental Center to participate with over 100 dental sites in the annual Give Kids A Smile! day, providing free dental services to more than 400 children in low to moderate income families.
Today’s economic stress has increased the number of families in need of affordable, quality dental health care. Through partnerships with organizations such as the United Way, Head Start, community health departments, and the Junior League, more families are helped. In the year 2009, the Dental Center treated 13,052 adult patients and 10,106 children.
In 1910, the Dental Center served approximately 500 patients. It is estimated that treatment will be provided to more than 25,000 patients in 2010. The goal is to serve those experiencing difficulty accessing dental care, and to turn no patient in pain away, regardless of their ability to pay.
