Miami County Dental Clinic Now Open

Miami County is finally gaining a valuable health resource: a dental clinic which has been established to serve the low-income population of Miami County. The ribbon cutting ceremony for the Miami County Dental Clinic (MCDC) was held Wednesday October 1, 2008, at the clinic, located at 1364 West Main Street in Troy. The clinic’s operation is a collaborative effort partnered with Allen County Health Partners (ACHP), a federally qualified health center located in Lima (Allen County). The two will share the office to serve as ACHP’s dental referral point for the Salud Community Health Center, located in Tipp City (Miami County), which serves the local migrant population.

Dr. Thomas Tomelin heads the dental team. Dr. Tomelin is a graduate of the University of Kentucky and has nearly 30 years of dental experience rich in public health. Also joining the team will be two dental assistants and a receptionist. Barbara Owen, local business owner of Practical Business Solutions in Troy, is serving as the clinic’s business manager. Future plans include hiring a dental hygienist.

Three years ago the Miami County Dental Task Force, a dedicated group of interested citizens and representatives from local public agencies, Troy City government, and the dental society, convened to explore the options for care, spurred by local dentist Dr. Leslie Culp. Following a circuitous course at times, the Task Force tackled the process of starting up a dental clinic. Major grant funding was received from local philanthropic foundations and companies. The Troy Foundation, United Way, Stouder Foundation, Upper Miami Valley Hospital, and Illinois Tool Works were all significant contributors to the clinic.

>Miami County Dental ClinicMCDC will operate as a safety net dental care provider accepting patients who are Medicaid eligible, underinsured or uninsured. Payment for the uninsured will be determined using a sliding fee schedule based upon income.  The office is open Monday through Friday and has begun accepting appointments. Call (937) 335-7750 for more information.
