Butler County Dental Clinic Re-Opens
Butler County is gaining an important resource: A community dental center.
In September of 2007, the Butler County Community Health Consortium (BCCHC) was awarded a grant that allowed it to re-open the dental center located in the Middletown Community Health Center, 930 9th Avenue, Middletown, Ohio.
Dr. Robert Merkel heads the center's dental team. Dr. Merkel is a graduate of Ohio State University’s College of Dentistry and has 32 years of experience in the field. Also joining the team, is Angi Birkle, as the clinical practice manager, who has worked in dentistry and public health for over 20 years.
As a safety-net dental care provider, the center will accept all patients regardless of their insurance coverage or income status. Payment will be decided by using a sliding-fee scale based on income. Co-pays will start at $35 for patients, at or below federal poverty level. The Middletown Community Dental Center will also be accepting Medicaid and private insurance.
Oral health has been identified as the number one unmet health need in Ohio, and Butler County is no exception. The results of a dental needs assessment performed in 2007 indicated that there are approximately 127 primary care dentists in the county, but of those, only 6 are accepting new Medicaid patients and/or uninsured patients. The Middletown Community Dental Center will provide a badly needed service to these citizens.
