5.2 Quality Assurance
 Quality assessment for programs is the process of evaluating them to ensure that they are meeting the goal of efficiently applying high-quality sealants to the teeth of children at higher risk for dental caries. Program operations should be compared to measures of good performance. Performance benchmarks are specific numerical points of reference for measuring program performance. Benchmarks for ODH-funded sealant programs can be found in “Benchmarks and Performance Standards.”
Quality cannot be ensured by simply assessing performance; it also requires action to correct any deficits identified.
Clinical Quality
Because resin-based sealants should be effective for as long as they are retained, measuring sealant retention is a proxy for assessing clinical quality. Detailed information on how to assess sealants for retention and how to conduct short-and long-term retention checks can be found in “Sealant Retention Evaluation.”
