2.2 Principle 1: Take Action to Stay Healthy

Other Precautions

Program staff can take other precautions to help prevent exposure to infectious agents, as follows:3

  • Do not eat, drink, smoke, apply cosmetics or lip balm, or handle contact lenses in areas where exposure to blood or OPIM may occur. Hand cream is not considered a cosmetic.
  • Keep jewelry simple (e.g., wedding band, watch), keep fingernails short, and do not use artificial nails. Artificial nails can harbor bacteria and may tear gloves.
  • Thoroughly wash and dry liquid soap containers before refilling them, because liquid soap can be contaminated by refills.

Training

All program staff should receive training about occupational exposure to potentially infectious agents and infection-control procedures that apply to the staff member’s assigned duties. Such training should address the portable environment and OSHA regulations.2

Training must be provided upon initial employment or when a change in duties or procedures may affect exposure and must be conducted at least once a year.2 Trainings should be documented.
