6.8 Disaster Preparedness

fire escape routeClinics need a plan for how to respond to disasters of both natural and human origin, including but not limited to tornadoes, hurricanes, ice storms and snowstorms, earthquakes, bomb threats, and bio-terrorism. The size and complexity of your clinic (dental only vs. health center) will determine how complex your clinic’s plan needs to be. Design the clinic’s plan to eliminate any confusion before, during, and after a disaster and to help the clinic resume normal operations. View an example of a bioterrorism and emergency preparedness plan.

In partnership with ADA, the Florida Dental Association developed The Five Step Guide to Disaster Preparedness and Recovery. The guide covers topics such as evaluating insurance coverage; protecting equipment, supplies, and patient records; dealing with power failures; communication during blackouts and evacuation; and emergency supplies the clinic should purchase to be prepared if a natural disaster occurs.
