4.3. Tracking and Managing Inventory
An
effective method for tracking inventory is a computerized spreadsheet
or database of all the supplies that have been ordered. Over time,
the spreadsheet or database can be used to determine rates of use for
all supplies and can reduce the need to take inventory manually. If
your clinic’s computer system is sophisticated,
a bar-coding system and bar-code reader can be used to log supplies in and
to log their use.
When stocking supplies, stock should be rotated so that the oldest
stock is used first. Many clinics use index cards on shelves to indicate
when supplies reach pre-determined minimum levels, at which point it
is time to place a new order.
