State or Federal Funding Opportunities

The Ohio Department of Health

The Ohio Department of Health is a significant funder of safety net dental clinics. The Oral Health Section’ grant funds help public or private nonprofit agencies in Ohio develop, implement, and maintain oral health programs for underserved individuals in Ohio. Grant funds are awarded through a competitive process under three grant programs: (1) safety net dental care, (2) school-based dental sealant programs, and (3) the Dental OPTIONS referral/case management program. Examples of other state and local government funding opportunities include community development block grants, specific grants through Medicaid agencies and other government divisions, and local tax levies.

States differ in the type and amount of funding available to clinic programs. State health departments generally receive monies via federal block grants from the Maternal and Child Health Bureau, which is part of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). Most states use some of these monies to help fund community-based oral health programs and clinical services to improve the health of mothers and children through grants or contracts. Some states also receive Preventive Health and Health Services block grant monies or other grant monies from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Some clinics (e.g., federally qualified health centers) can apply directly to the federal government for funding. To search for funding opportunities from the federal government, you may want to register and apply through the single source for federal grants at http://www.grants.gov.
