5.2 Funding Sources

money While this module describes a variety of potential types of funding sources, the funding portion of Ohio Safety Net Dental Clinics provides easy access to a variety of potential Ohio funding sources, most of which have a history of funding safety net dental clinics.

Governments

Federal, state, county, or local governments receive and disperse public funds for specific focus areas or categorical programs (e.g., maternal and child health, rural health). Unlike most state oral health programs, the Ohio Department of Health has funded grants to safety net dental clinics for a number of years.

Public Charities

Public charities are public foundations that primarily operate programs benefiting organizations or individuals.

Private Foundations

Private foundations are nongovernmental, nonprofit organizations with endowments that are usually managed by a board of trustees or directors. Money for foundation grants is donated from a single source, such as an individual, family, or corporation.

Community Foundations

Community foundations are similar to private foundations, but funds are derived from many donors rather than from a single source. Community foundations are usually classified under the tax code as public charities 501(c)(3) and are subject to different rules and regulations than those that govern private foundations.
