3.5. Equipment
Purchasing new equipment is generally preferable if sufficient funds are available. Clinics that are nonprofit organizations may be able to obtain discounts from dental supply vendors if the clinic verifies that it is a core safety net provider. When selecting a dental supply vendor, consider the types of service and support each vendor offers, as well as its prices. National vendors generally offer regional or local support. Also, be aware that not all vendors carry every manufacturer’s equipment. For a list of national vendors, see “Dental Buying Guide” on the American Dental Associations’ Web site. In addition to considering national vendors, check the Yellow Pages of the phone book for local vendors. Using Donated, Used Equipment If funds to purchase new equipment are not available, clinics can acquire donated, used equipment. For example, private dentists who are upgrading their offices may donate equipment (such a donation may be attractive to the private dentist because the donation is a charitable gift, which may have favorable tax implications). However, donated, used equipment is not always the good deal it appears to be. Before accepting used equipment, the clinic should obtain the opinion of an experienced dentist (other than the one donating the equipment) or of a dental supply vendor representative about the equipment’s condition. TipBefore accepting used equipment, answer the following questions:: (1) can the equipment be used to provide modern dentistry?, (2) how long is the equipment likely to last?, (3) can replacement parts can be obtained easily?, and (4) are all utility connections to install the equipment included or available? Leasing Equipment Leasing equipment is another option for clinics that cannot afford to purchase new equipment. For more information, contact dental supply vendors in your area. |
Clinics have several options to consider for obtaining equipment. They
may (1) purchase new equipment, (2) use donated, used equipment, or
(3) lease equipment. The decision depends upon each clinic’s specific
circumstances. Each has advantages and disadvantages that must be considered.
Once again, the clinic’s
mission and other financial factors may influence the best decision for a clinic.
