2.6 Bacteriologic Testing
Dentists need to follow appropriate procedures when performing such testing. They should use the manufacturer’s guidelines for acceptable levels of bacteria as reflected by the specific test. Such testing has value in determining whether the active infection has abated. Although testing can be costly, it is the best method available to check for infection elimination or relapse after restorative therapy. |

Tests for MS and Lactobacillus, which rely on salivary sampling, are commercially available. There are different methods of sample collection, such as swabbing and stimulated saliva collection, and each test requires a specific collection technique. There are also timing issues for different test designs. Some tests recommend collection after fasting, some after eating a meal, and some after eating a snack high in sugar.
