Module 4: Managing Dental Emergencies
4.4 Pain from Other Causes

Lymphadenopathy

Lymphadenopathy is common in young children. The lymph nodes may simply be sensitive to the touch or may be associated with some edematous areas around the jaw and face, suggesting a dental cellulitis. In 50 percent of cases, lymphadenopathy is idiopathic, and the cause is never discovered. Bilateral sensitive nodes suggest an infectious origin.

Acetaminophen Use

Young children often present at the dental office after several days of pain. Over-the-counter acetaminophen is commonly used, and risk of liver toxicity is high. The dentist should assess use of this medication and counsel parents on controlling the amount given to children.
