Module 3: Restorative Treatment
3.2 Positioning

Dentist and patient

Dental Chair

Most dentists prefer to treat young children in the typical supine dental position. In some cases, a child will separate from parents and sit alone in the dental chair for a short, non-invasive procedure. Frequently, however, this is not possible, and the dentist must try other alternatives, such as those described below.

Knee-to-Knee Technique

The knee-to-knee technique is suitable for some minor restorative care, but using this technique may be challenging for dentists who are not accustomed to it. (For more information on the knee-to-knee technique, see Module 2, Section 2.3.)

Hold-and-Go Technique

The hold-and-go technique may be considered when restorative care is expected to take only a short time, and when only one procedure is required. For example, if a child needs just one restoration and can be placed on a recall schedule, the hold-and-go technique may be the best way to render care. (For more information on the hold-and-go technique, see Module 2, Section 2.3.)
