Summa Center for Dental Health
For people living in the Akron area, great dentistry is never far away. That’s because a new era of dental care came to the community in 2007 with the opening of Summa Health System’s Center for Dental Health. The 3,000 square foot center, located on the Summa Akron City Hospital campus provides a full range of routine and advanced dental procedures.
Summa opened the dental center for two reasons. First, as one of the area’s leading teaching institutions, it’s important to offer learning opportunities for dental residents beginning their careers. Second, opening the dental center helped fill a critical community need for care.
“The decision to open the Center for Dental Health was made due to both the community’s need for dental care and Summa’s continued dedication to advanced education and training for both dentistry and medicine,” said Dental Residency Director Marvin D. Cohen, DDS. “The center is open to the entire community, and we look forward to providing our patients with the latest state-of-the-art equipment, materials and technology.”
The opening of the dental center represented the beginning of Summa’s General Practice Dental Residency Program. Under the leadership of Dr. Joseph Zarconi, Summa’s vice president for medical education and research, and Dr. Cohen, Summa received its initial accreditation approval from the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association in February 2007.
Each class of four dental residents trains for a term of one year in the dental center. Residents gain experience in a variety of procedures, including oral and maxillofacial surgery, periodontics, pediatric dentistry, restorative and cosmetic dentistry, implant dentistry, both surgical and restorative, endodontics and oral medicine. Residents also learn to evaluate and treat developmentally compromised patients in both the outpatient clinic and in the hospital operating rooms. There also is a dental resident on-call 24/7. In addition to the residents, the center is supported by a practice manager, a dental hygienist, four dental assistants, a billing associate and two dental office associates.
As the Center completes its fifth year of operations, plans for the future continue to take shape. It is anticipated that the Center will offer expanded services throughout the Akron community including screening programs, oral hygiene education, and an expansion of treatment for special needs patients.
The Center is located on the Summa Akron City Hospital campus in the Professional Center North building, 75 Arch St., Suite 303. New patients are being accepted by calling 330-375-6262.
